Donegal Town Attractions
Donegal Town is dominated by its historic Abbey and Castle. At its centre, The Diamond, there stands a monument dedicated to the the four friars who compiled the Annals of the Four Masters in the 17th Century. This historical text records the early history of Ireland. The original text is now exhibited six miles south of Donegal Town in Ballintra in the Ballymagroarty Historical Centre. Donegal Castle stands beside the Diamond, overlooking the river Eske. Here was the seat of the O'Donnells, the ruling family in Donegal in the 15th Century. The castle is richly furnished and has an impressive display of Persian rugs and French tapestries. Guided historical tours of Donegal Town take place daily during the summer.The Donegal Art Gallery is located on Upper Main Street, Donegal Town, and is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 6pm. The Gallery is opened all year. All exhibitions feature either local artists or local scenes of County Donegal.
Donegal Craft Village is just half a mile south of Donegal Town and features some of the cream innovative Irish crafts including jewellery, painting and ironmongery.
Walking, Angling, Golfing, Surfing and other Donegal Activities
There are plenty of local activities including horseriding and walking, with guided hill walks and walks along Donegal's Bluestack Way. There is a world renown surfing spot at the beaches of Bundoran, just a 10 minute drive away. Nearby Murvagh Golf Club, one of the top golf courses in Ireland, has a spectacular links course overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sea Angling is a popular activity with boats available for hire. Bicycles can also be hired nearby and horse riding can be enjoyed within a short distance of the town centre.Donegal is one of Ireland's primary game-angling areas with many centres for salmon, sea and brown trout fishing. Charter boats are available locally for hire.
Donegal has many miles of beautiful sandy beaches with Blue Flag beaches at nearby Murvagh, overlooked by An Lathaigh accommodation and Rossnowlagh beach which is only 5 km away.
Touring County Donegal

The spectacular views from here are not to be missed.Glenveagh National Park, near Letterkenny, is only 45 minutes drive away and has 40,873 acres of mountains, lakes, glens and woods. The park has a herd of red deer and a recently reintroduced population of eagles. The visitor Centre has displays and audio-visual shows about the park, its history and wildlife. The Scottish style castle in the park is surrounded by one of the finest gardens in Ireland.
